To put this in context, I’ve only been running since mid 2016 and was training for my first 5K in October which got cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew. Lo and behold I had no idea that I would fall in love with trail running (and soon ultras) and loath road racing altogether.

Half marathons were more to my liking as I enjoyed the challenge and was able to recover from them fairly quickly. I figured that marathons were going to be few and far between. After just missing my goal time of sub 4 hours by three seconds, I could barely walk. After running my first marathon last November in Richmond, I could never fathom running an ultrarace. I suppose I should start off with a little about my ultra-running career (or lack thereof).

A frequent walk in the woods can help reduce your chances of getting diabetes.Hiking on a regular basis can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 10 points.Hiking reduces your chances of heart disease.It’s something nearly everyone can do, and it’s a lifelong activity, something you can do long after your body has said no to more aggressive outdoor pursuits. Hiking regularly, or making a hike a part of your regular exercise regimen, can have a dramatic impact on your physical and mental health. Today, we revisit Medoc Mountain for a little of the colorful tranquility that can come in so handy on a Monday morning.
MEDOC MOUNTAIN FALL RACR FULL
In Friday’s post, we told you about four places you can hike in the Piedmont that are full of fall color, devoid of the fall crowds: the Ridgeline Trail near Charlotte, joining North Carolina’s Crowders Mountain State Park with South Carolina’s Kings Mountain State Park the Sauratown Trail north of the Triad, linking Hanging Rock State Park with Pilot Mountain State Park to the west the 60-mile Falls Lake portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail through the Triangle and Medoc Mountain State Park in the quiet of the northeast Piedmont. Today’s 90-Second Escape: Medoc Mountain State Park, as it makes the transition from green to gold. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape - essentially, a 90-second video of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. Monday - never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast.
